We are excited to announce that Amulet has nine nominations for the 2023 RailStaff Awards, across four different categories:

  • Samaritans lifesaver
  • Rail person of the year
  • Rail team of the year
  • Sustainability & net zero person or team

Both individuals and security teams have been nominated for the highly regarded awards, which seek to celebrate the often-overlooked courage, bravery, and everyday achievements of staff across the sector.

Samaritans lifesaver
We have three nominations for this award, highlighting their incredible bravery when dealing with life-or-death situations.

Michaela Joseph – c2c Rail
Michaela was nominated after saving her colleague’s life. She noticed that he had not returned to work after his holiday, and after visiting his property and checking with neighbours, found out that no one had seen him.

With the help of her colleagues, they broke down his door, found him unconscious, awoke him and called emergency services. If they had waited for just a few hours longer, Michaela’s colleague would have died.

Mohammed Hussain – c2c Rail
While patrolling his platform, Mohammed saw a woman close to the edge of a platform. He told her to step back, but she jumped onto the track as the train arrived.

He used hand signals to stop the train just a few feet away from the woman and saved her life. She was taken to hospital afterwards.

George Mitchell and Harry Jordan – Northern Rail
George and Harry were carrying out a routine patrol when they came across a woman who seemed distressed and at the platform edge. George, a Travel Safety Officer (TSO), gently introduced himself and empathetically spoke to the woman, while Harry spoke to other passengers who were distressed while watching her behaviour.

George managed to persuade her to move from the platform edge, and emergency services were able to take the woman to the local hospital.

Rail person of the year
We have three nominations for this award, which aims to celebrate the exemplary work staff carry out every day.

Mohammed Qureshi – c2c Rail
Mohammed was nominated not just for his passion for vigilant security patrols, but for his excellent customer service skills too.

The pride he has shown in his role helps his whole team reach the high standard he has set. He has shown extensive knowledge needed whilst completing security checks and has also helped identify and report a range of safeguarding risks.

Philip Olweny – c2c Rail
Philip helped transform the station he works in, creating a safe environment for passengers and reducing ticketless travel.

He has not only become a regular and welcomed sight for daily passengers, but he has also dedicated himself to safeguarding efforts, showing concerns for peoples’ welfare regardless of their background.

Issac Enyan – c2c Rail
Issac effectively safeguards at his station – dealing with fare evasions, verbal abuse, and anti-social behaviour. He also helps young people caught fare evading by stopping them and giving them advice on their life choices.

His dedication to helping young people change their lives is a constant and well-respected effort amongst his wider team.

Rail team of the year
We have two nominations for rail team of the year, that show the very best of what team working has to offer.

Serrano Safeguarding Team – Operation Beach
Starting as a 12-week trial in 2021, this operation is now permanent and works to reduce fare evasion, non-ticket and revenue bylaw offences, incidents, support safeguarding, and use multi-team communications to build intelligence.

This scheme has been incredibly effective at reducing crime and making Grays station far safer, including the reduction of assaults and antisocial behaviour by 60 per cent.

Blackpool travel safe officers – Blackpool North Station
The Blackpool TSOs ensure that the conductors and customers are safe on trains and in stations, and assist with a range of safeguarding issues, crowd control and disruption issues.

Recently, the team identified a vulnerable and upset woman enter the station when trains weren’t running. When officers took their time and warmly spoke with her, she explained that she had a brain injury that made it hard to travel.

The team offered her refreshment and their support, and were able to contact a friend who could take her home safely. This instance highlights their ability to go above and beyond regular service requirements.

Sustainability & net zero person or team
Finally, we have one nominee for sustainability efforts, a category for people who drive the security and rail industry towards a better future.

Lewis Mckay – Avanti
Lewis helped implement our digital platform Mo:dus, and during the process helped make day-to-day processes more sustainable. The platform improved client relations as users could report information and review data in a transparent way. In the process, it also reduced paper usage.

Lewis realised this additional benefit of the platform, and was able to further enhance Mo:dus to manage multiple records, which helped to further reduce paper use.

This also helped save costs on paper procurement, improved efficiency and accessibility to documents.
